A Service of Mourning and Lament into Joy and Dancing Recognizing Our Losses and Celebrating Our Gifts

Worship at 9:00 a.m.

The congregation reads the boldface responses.

Once the prelude has begun, please cease all conversation
as we prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

PRELUDE
Transfiguration – Ricky Manalo

INTRODUCTION

On Transfiguration, the appearance of Jesus’ face changed. Today we are recognizing the tremendous loss we have experienced in many ways in the last two years and lamenting that loss. During the second part of the service, we will move to joy—the joy of creation, the many blessings in our lives and in our congregation, the alleluia moments! Come journey with us!

CALL TO WORSHIP

This is the day the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
Like Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leading the way to share God’s love with all peoples.

GATHERING HYMN
How Good, Lord, to Be Here (LBW 89)

1.  How good, Lord, to be here!

     Your glory fills the night;

     your face and garments, like the sun,

     shine with unborrowed light.

2.  How good, Lord, to be here!

     your beauty to behold

     where Moses and Elijah stand,

     your messengers of old.

3.  Fulfiller of the past

     and hope of things to be,

     we hail your body glorified

     and our redemption see.

4.  Before we taste of death,

     we see your kingdom come;

     we long to hold the vision bright

     and make this hill our home.

5.  How good, Lord, to be here!

     Yet we may not remain;

     but since you bid us leave the mount,

     come with us to the plain.

Text: Joseph A. Robinson, 1858-1933, alt.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection

Holy and gracious God,
I confess that I have sinned against you. Some of my sin I know—the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed—but some is known only to you. In the name of Jesus Christ I ask forgiveness. Deliver and restore me, that I may be at peace.

By the mercy of God we are united with + Jesus Christ, and in him we are forgiven. We leave our sins at Jesus’ feet, and can rest in the knowledge of God’s peace.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Almighty God, on the mountain you showed your glory in the transfiguration of your Son. Give us the vision to see beyond the turmoil of our world and to behold the king in all his glory; Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

MOURNING AND LAMENT
PSALMODY
Psalm 130
(Read responsively.)

 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
     Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
    to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
    Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
    so that you may be revered.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;

my soul waits for the Lord
    more than those who watch for the morning,
    more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
    For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
    and with him is great power to redeem.

It is he who will redeem Israel
    from all its iniquities.

Lament and Recognition of Loss: An Interpretation of Psalm 6 and 30
Naming of Our Losses

READING
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NRSV

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

The Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.

OUR MOURNING TURNS TO JOY AND DANCING

Psalm 100
(Read Responsively)

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come into his presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he that made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise.
    Give thanks to him, bless his name.
For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,
    and his faithfulness to all generations.

REFLECTION AND THANKSGIVING

HYMN OF THE DAY
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (LBW 543 Vs. 1,4)

1   Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

     O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!

     Let all who hear now to his temple draw near,

     joining in glad adoration!

4   Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!

     All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!

     Let the amen sound from his people again.

     Gladly forever adore him!
Text: Joachim Neander, 1650-1680; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878, alt.

SENDING HYMN AND FAREWELL TO ALLELUIA

A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing! (LBW 157 vs. 1,6,7)

1.       A hymn of glory let us sing!

          New hymns throughout the world shall ring:

          Alleluia! Alleluia!

          Christ, by a road before untrod,

          ascends unto the throne of God.

          Alleluia! Alleluia!

          Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

6.       Give us your joy on earth, O Lord,

          in heav’n to be our great reward.

          Alleluia! Alleluia!

          When throned with you forever, we

          shall praise your name eternally.

          Alleluia! Alleluia!

          Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

7.       O risen Christ, ascended Lord,

          all praise to you let earth accord:
